Caroline Bynum

Caroline Walker Bynum is professor emerita at the Institute for Advanced Study and Columbia University. Her most recent book is Dissimilar Similitudes: Devotional Objects in Late Medieval Europe (2020). “Interrogating ‘Likeness’: Fake Friends, Similia Similibus, and Heavenly Crowns,” published in Historische Anthropologie, spring 2020, deals with some of the same issues. Her 1995 book The Resurrection of the Body in Western Christianity, 200-1336, which won prizes from the American Philosophical Society and Phi Beta Kappa, was reissued by Columbia University Press in 2017 with a new introduction. Her essay on a contemporary topic, “Growing Up in the Shadow of Confederate Monuments,” will appear in the journal Common Knowledge in spring 2021.
