Christopher Freeburg holds the Presidential Humanities and Social Sciences Endowed Chair at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He is an award-winning author of three scholarly books and numerous articles, including Melville and the Idea of Blackness: Race and Imperialism in Nineteenth-Century America (2012), Black Aesthetics and the Interior Life (2017), and Counterlife: Slavery after Resistance and Social Death (2021). His fourth book, Soul: A Brief History of Black Cultural Life, is forthcoming.
