Steven Mailloux is President’s Professor Emeritus of Rhetoric at Loyola Marymount University and Chancellor’s Professor Emeritus of Rhetoric at the University of California, Irvine. His previous contributions to Critical Inquiry include “Rhetorical Hermeneutics” (Summer 1985). He is the editor or author of several books including Interpretive Conventions: The Reader in the Study of American Fiction (1982), Rhetorical Power (1989), Reception Histories: Rhetoric, Pragmatism, and American Cultural Politics (1998), Disciplinary Identities: Rhetorical Paths of English, Speech and Composition (2006) and Rhetoric’s Pragmatism: Essays in Rhetorical Hermeneutics (2017). He is coeditor of the forthcoming fifth volume of the Cambridge History of Rhetoric.
